Principal Paintings

Richard revisited themes and motifs throughout his career: the sun, moons, trees, churches, vineyards, a startled horse and rivers. Often he painted many smaller versions and experimented with style, composition and mediums before deciding on a final piece. He called these his ‘Principal Paintings.’ All his other paintings culminated in these larger main principal paintings.
