Originally from Preston, Michael emigrated to Australia in his early twenties and later travelled to New Zealand where he held his first exhibition. He returned to the UK to attend colleges of Art in Preston and Plymouth before settling in Cornwall. In 1984 Michael won the Western Morning News Open Art Competition and has received many awards since. He is member of the Cornish Watercolour Society and Gwynngala.
The sensitivity of colour in Michael’s watercolours reflect his deep understanding of the subtleties of the natural world. There is a calmness to his watercolours that capture the peacefulness that can be found in nature. In contrast his oils are loud and powerful overflowing with energy and vibrance, showing the wildness and power in nature. It is a wonderful use of different mark making and using the mediums to their strengths.
